G20 in Cannes and the worlds media attention is on the French Riviera

Thousands of protesters have joined a noisy and colourful demonstration on the French Riviera, as world leaders prepare to attend the G20 conference in Cannes.
Protesters say the global superpowers should concentrate on ending world hunger and changing the architecture of global governance to aid the most vulnerable. The irony of the backdrop to this crucial meeting discussing austerity measures being Cannes, one of the most luxurious locations is not lost on many!
After the violent protests in Greece two weeks ago, the police presence was heavy, with barriers blocking streets. Metal shutters and plywood sheets protected windows of shops, and most noticeably, banks. Organisers are angry that Cannes has become a virtual no-go area for protesters, with a security cordon shutting off the Palais du Festival where the leaders will meet.
Regardless, demonstrators and non governmental organisations (NGOs) are planning a series of stunts along the Cote d’Azur and the extensive police presence is evident throughout the coastal areas in anticipation.
