Do you remember the movie, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels? It was a 1988 American comedy set in the French Riviera. Directed by Frank Oz, the screenplay focuses on two con artists – Michael Caine and Steve Martin, who ply their trade on the French Riviera. The stunning filming locations for ‘Dirty rotten scoundrels’ included Antibes, Cannes, Beaulieu-sur-Mer (shown in the film as “Beaumont-sur-Mer”), Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Nice, and Villefranche-sur-Mer. Always a haven for film stars, celebrities and holiday makers, it’s important to take care when you’re first considering buying a luxury property in these world renowned beauty spots.

In the movie – and it’s worth watching, if you haven’t seen it already, Michael Caine stars as cultivated, suave con artist Lawrence Jamieson, who operates in the deluxe hotels along the French Riviera. His affairs are watched by the resident chief of police who receives a handsome cut of his take. Their only worry is a mysterious, anonymous character known only as ‘The Jackal’ who has been preying on other wealthy victims. So when small time American hustler Freddy Benson, played by Steve Martin decides to search for easy targets in Beaumont-sur-Mer, Lawrence is sure he has found the Jackal.

But Janet Colgate, played by  Glenne Headly, a naive and beautiful wealthy American heiress, succeeds in embezzling all of them and winning Freddy’s heart in the process. She returns at the end as a new character Paula and announces that as The Jackal she has made “3 million dollars, but your 50,000 was the most fun.” Joining arms, they set out to find fresh victims.
